But Upperchurch responded with a blitz of goals to leave us trailing at half-time 4-3 to 1-4. Mullinahone started the second half much better and changes made were working as Mullinahone got on top in most sectors of the field. Championship

Next our focus turned to the Championship and we started our campaign off with an away win over Templetuohy on July 25th. Mullinahone opted to play against the wind in the first half and were first to score with a nicely taken point by Fiona Maher. This was followed by a lovely fisted point from Lyza O’Halloran. Templetuohy dominated the next 15 minutes with some well taken points but a goal from Fiona Maher brought Mullinahone back into it. Fiona and Mary Connolly netted also before half time to leave the score 3-4 to 1-5. Goalie Grainne O’Meara had the Templetuohy defence under pressure throughout the second half with her long kick-outs which resulted in frees for Mullinahone which were converted by Mary Connolly. The Mullinahone defence coped well under a lot of pressure in the second half as Templetouhy tried to get goals. Eileen Brennan, Mary Connolly, Emma Maher and Natasha Scott worked hard around midfield to keep the pressure on Templetuohy right up to the end with Mary Connolly taking another goal. Thirteen year old Roisin O’Meara made her junior championship debut for the injured Eva Hackett. A bit of history made by the O’Meara’s with the first aunt and niece on the same team for Mullinahone. Mullinahone went on to win by 4-12 to 2-8.

Next we played Fethard which ended in a victory after a tough game. The game was played in wet and windy conditions and Mullinahone played against the wind in the first half. Fethard used the wind advantage and scored some good points. Fiona Maher opened the Mullinahone scoring with a nice point followed by a well taken point by Maighread Britton. Fethard dominated the half putting the Mullinahone defence under a lot of pressure. But Mullinahone finished the half with a goal from Ailish Langton after a great run by Maireid Luttrell to level the match at 1-3 to 0-6 at half time. Mullinahone got on top at the re-start and midfield dominated to put lots of pressure on the Fethard defence. The forwards were working well and some good points were scored by Fiona Maher, Natasha Scott and Maireid Luttrell and a lovely goal from Eileen Brennan. Fethard tried hard to reduce the lead but good defensive work kept their scoring to just one point in the second half. This was a tough battle but the Mullinahone girls fought hard to the end to win by 2-8 to 0-7. Team: Grainne O’Meara, Martina Griffin, Ann Marie Maher(Capt.), Gillian Collins, Eva Hackett, Sarah Curran, Elaine O’Brien, Maireid Luttrell(0-2), Tanja St.John, Natasha Scott(0-2), Ailish Langton(1-0), Lyza O’Halloran, Fiona Maher(0-3), Maighread Britton(0-1) and Eileen Brennan. Cappawhite were our next opponents and here we suffered our first defeat in the championship against a much stronger Cappawhite team.

Our last game in the championship series against Upperchurch was played at home. Missing a lot of players through injury a few changes had to be made but the girls started very well against a strong Upperchurch team. Mary Connolly opened the scoring followed by a lovely point from Ann Marie Horan. Natasha Scott scored a goal and Mullinahone were up 1-3 to 0-2 at half-time after playing against the wind. Upperchurch started the second half with a goal within the first few minutes. Mary Connolly had another point to keep Mullinahone ahead and the defence lead by Ailish Langton, Maireid Luttrell and Sarah Curran worked tirelessly to keep out the Upperchurch attack but for the final quarter Upperchurch dominated and the Mullinahone defence was forced to concede frees which Upperchurch converted. Eileen Brennan scored a great point to lift the Mullinahone team but Upperchurch finished the game with a goal to kill of the challenge 2-8 to 1-5. The team was: Emma Merrigan, Martina Griffin, Ailish Langton, Gillian Collins, Sarah Curran, Maireid Luttrell(Capt.), Eva Hackett, Eileen Brennan(0-1), Tanya St.John, Lyza O’Halloran, Emma Maher, Natasha Scott(1-0), Ann Marie Horan(0-1), Mary Connolly(0-2) & Fiona Maher(0-1). Playoff 03.10.2004

Our play off opposition was Newcastle and this game was set for Kilsheelan. Newcastle played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half but Mullinahone were first to score with a point from Mary Connolly. Newcastle soon responded with the equaliser and followed with three further points before half-time. The Mullinahone defence was under constant pressure but goalie Emma Merrigan pulled off some excellent saves in the first half to keep Mullinahone in touch. The wind calmed down in the second half so Mullinahone didn’t enjoy the same strong advantage as Newcastle had but scores were hard to come by for both sides. Lyza O’Halloran had a shot on goal saved but scored a nice point soon after. Fiona Maher got her name on the score sheet with a well taken point and then got through for a great goal to put Mullinahone ahead 1-3 to 0-4. Newcastle battled all the way and Emma Merrigan saved a penalty to keep Mullinahone ahead. Lyza scored another point from a free then Newcastle scored their first point of the second half which left just two points between the teams. Newcastle tried hard to get a winning goal and there was a few scary moments before the referee blew the final whistle and Mullinahone held on to win 1-4 to 0-5. All the team worked hard on the day but Emma Merrigan gave a brilliant display in goal and Ailish Langton also had an outstanding game and worked tirelessly at full back. Team: Emma Merrigan, Martina Griffin, Ailish Langton, Gillian Collins, Sarah Curran, Maireid Luttrell(Capt.), Eva Hackett, Eileen Brennan, Tanja St.John, Natasha Scott, Emma Maher, Mary Connolly(0-1), Fiona Maher(1-1), Maighread Britton, Lyza O’Halloran(0-2). The Junior girls were now through to the County Quarter Final where they faced Ballyporeen on October 17th. The game was played in Clonmel Og’s pitch in good conditions however the game was a very one sided affair with Mullinahone running out easy winners 3-8 to no score. The Mullinahone team were on top from the start and our forwards were working well but failed to convert a lot of scores. Goals from Maighread Britton and Mary Connolly had Mullinahone in control by half time. Goalie Emma Merrigan came out field in the second half and scored 1-1.
