GOOD NEWS doesn’t always make the headlines but that is hardly true in Mullinahone this week.
Congratulations go to a member of the local Diaspora.
During late January Pat Maher who is from Modeshill and lives in Cork received the good news that he had been promoted to superintendent in the gardai.
Pat is one of 12 children of Josie and the late Tod Maher, Modeshill. He will now be stationed in Bandon.
He was stationed in Clonakilty as inspector. He has spent almost his whole garda career in Cork. Now in his early 50s, Supt Maher was born second son and fifth child of Josie and Tod Maher. He received his primary school education at Mohober NS.
He then moved to Mullinahone vocational school where he completed his formal education.
In 1972 he passed the garda entrance exam and towards the end of that year he began training in Templemore.
Pat was posted to Cork City where he served as a garda in Mayfield and MacCurtain Street. He was promoted to sergeant and he moved to West Cork.
He served as sergeant in Kinsale, Timoleague and Macroom before becoming inspector at Clonakilty.
Pat Maher lives in Minane Bridge near Carrigaline outside Cork City. He is married to the former Helen Grant of Wilton. The couple have five sons, ranging in age from the later twenties to teenagers.


Ladies football -
The ladies football club thanked all who supported the club’s under-16 and 18 county champions in their campaign to raise funds for sportswear.
Thanks also went to Kellys Shop for putting on a very nice display in their window on the Square.
In the middle of the display was a clock. The clock was the centre of the fundraising effort. Eventually under the scrutiny of many eyes the clock stopped at 4.04. This meant that the winner of the e100 was Martina Griffin. Second and third prizes of e25 went to The Kerryman and Paddy Clarke.

As a result of the fund raiser it was possible to provide the young ladies with that sportswear.
Denis Collins reminds the 16s to know that training resumes on Saturday, 11am.


Social Club -
Members of Knocknagow Social Club will be delighted to learn that the club resumes on March 2.
A visit to Ballingarry club will be held the following week.


Appeal -
Mass goers over the weekend were addressed by Fr Gerard Markey of the Columban Fathers.
Fr Markey of County Cork spoke on his missionary life in the Phillipines.
He was also promoting the order’s missionary magazine, The Far East.
Fr Markey was due to visit the primary schools of the parish.
devotions - Lenten devotions each Sunday in St Michael’s Church during Lent.
Devotions are at 7pm and each Sunday is devoted to different townslands in the parish.
Each Thursday, 7pm-9pm, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in St Michaels Church.


Hiccup -
There was no local lotto draw on Monday week. Reason was that the lotto licence had run out of date and hadn’t been renewed by the court. This was being done on February 22 and all should be in readiness for a draw that night.


Credit Union -
Renovation to the older section of the Credit Union offices in Killaghy Street is expected to be completed shortly.
When this is done decoration will quickly follow and then the whole building will be in operation in comfortable conditions.

Reports after four months of the current credit union year indicate that the local credit union is on target to reach its e3000,000 assets target by the end of the union year.

So far this year almost e280,000 has been extended in credit to members while almost e250,000 has been repaid to the credit union.

During the Spring, members of the board of directors take part in training courses in various aspects of credit union work.
These courses help directors to keep abreast of the most recent thinking in credit union affairs.

Mohober NS represent Mullinahone Credit Union at the next rounds of the national Credit Union primary school’s quiz in Kilkenny on the first weekend in March.
Former Credit Union director John Power, Newtown, Drangan, is in hospital.


Minors -
The under-18 minor footballers play in the ‘B’ grade in the South Tipp Championship this year. They play league games against St Patrick’s Gaels, Marlfield, Kilsheelan/Kilcash, Fethard and Ballingarry.
After the league, section third play second in the semi-final while the league winners or first in the section, will go straight to the final.

This championship will get underway in March / early April. Because they won the ‘B’ championship in 2004 the minor hurlers play in the South Tipp ‘A’ minor hurling championship this year.The club did not appeal the South Board grading of the team. They play Moyle Rovers, St Patrick’s Gaels, Ballingarry, Killenaule and Carrick Swans.
Again after the league section, third will play second in the semi-final while first will go straight to the final.
Martin Cody, Poulacapple, has been appointed manager of the hurling team.


Soccer -
Training for under 10s resumes in the soccer pitch on Saturdays at 12 noon.
Under-10 means anyone born in 1994 or more recently. This league begins after Easter and newcomer are welcome. Contact: John Bermingham.


Still lost -
No positive information so far about the composition of the Mullinahone NS (girls) team which took part in the great Parish Primary Schools Quiz of March, 1959.
To jog memories girls in 6th class in Mullinahone NS at that time were Josephine Bradshaw, Jamestown; Catherine Hickey, Kickham Street; Noreen Cahill, Clonagoose; and Mary Carmel Fitzgerald, Killaghy Street. The girls in 5th class were Mary Watters, Bawnavrona; Helen Croke, Jamestown; Eileen Scott, Jamestown; Mary Hogan, Clonagoose; Sabina Croke, Newlands; Eileen Hickey, Carrick Street and Frances Bolger, Ballinacloghy.
Mary Hogan-Kenny, and Frances Bolger-Brett say that they were not members of the team so the search goes on.
The teacher at the time was the late Mrs O’Mahony.


Hurling briefs -

Tipperary senior hurlers were back in league action in Semple Stadium on Sunday.
They had a hard won victory over Down. Selected on the side were Paul Curran and Eoin Kelly.
Eoin did not start but had scored 1-9 for LIT to help them to win the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final the previous day.
During the game Paul Kelly came on and his arrival at midfield seemed to improve the Tipp team.
At club level Mullinahone expect to be playing The Combo, Golden and Eire Og in the first round of the league on March 6.


Quiz -
A table quiz to raise funds for the upkeep and repair of the route to the Carraigmoclear memorial will be held in Nonies of Nine-Mile-House on March 18.
