THE wedding took place
on Thursday of Liam Crowley of Kilvemnon and Majella Power of Clonmel.
Liam is the eldest son of the late Michael Crowley and the late Mary
Crowley. Liam’s lovely bride is the daughter of Noel and Phyllis
Power.
It was a lovely day and even the weather played its part. The wedding
took place in St Michael’s Church in Mullinahone. The ceremony
was performed by Fr John McGrath.
The bride was given by her father. Her bridesmaids were Maria Power
and Teresa Power.
Liam’s best man was his younger brother Michéal Crowley
and his groomsman was his cousin Michael Crowley. The bridal party
was completed by Dale Crowley who was page boy and Caia Crowley who
was a flower girl. The readers at the Mass were the groom’s
aunt, Sister Agnes Crowley and Breda O’Donohue.
The prayers of the faithful were recited by Sister Maria Crowley,
Michéal Crowley, Declan Power, Marcus Power, Adam Power and
Rena Kelly. The gifts were brought to the altar by Phyllis Power
(mother of the groom) and Jerry Kelly. The floral arrangements were
prepared by Rose Byrne. Valerie Costello (vocalist) and Mary Noonan
(organist) provided beautiful music on
the day.
The reception took place in the Newpark Hotel in Kilkenny. The reception
continued until late into the night and was thoroughly enjoyed by
all. The newly weds spent their honeymoon touring. The couple will
reside in Kilvemnon.
Golf – The next outing of Mullinahone Golf
Society will take place on Saturday. This time the venue is Tipperary
Town Golf Club.
If you want to play golf in the shade of the Galtees you will have
to be up and about early as tee off times are 9am to 10am. For further
details please contact Richie Needham.
U-12 hurling – Mullinahone will be the venue
on September 17 for an intercounty under-12 hurling tournament. Four
teams are set
to represent their counties. Tipperary will be represented by the
home team Mullinahone. Galway will be represented by Cappataggle.
Quin will represent Clare while our neighbours John Lockes, Callan
will carry the Kilkenny standard. To add colour and glamour to the
day each team will play in its county colours. The day is set to
get underway mid-morning and will continue until mid-afternoon.
It is envisaged that the tournament will be played as a round robin
so every team will play every other team with the two top teams competing
in the final.
It promises to be a real festival of hurling with a minimum of seven
games. Our own under-12’s had a pretty good year losing the
South Tipp semi-final by a point to the eventual winners, Fethard.
Junior hurlers – Our junior hurlers were in
action against Killenaule in Ballingarry on Saturday. Off the back
on a defeat against
Ballylooby they were hoping to improve their record. In the last
couple of years they had been on a par with Killenaule at junior
level but this year the juniors seem to have disimproved. The team
scored 2-10 on Saturday but Killenaule struck 2-22 to run out as
easy winners. The biggest problem appears to be an inability to score.
Most of their points came from frees from Joseph Maher.
The panel appeared to lack players and the only substitute appeared
to be Terry O’Brien. The team didn’t get into Saturday
night’s game and were always playing catch up.
Goalkeeper Bill Tobin couldn’t be blamed for either of the
shots that beat him. Former All-Star Paul Shelly caused a lot of
problems for the Mullinahone full back line. Here Niall Doheny at
corner back defended well for Mullinahone. Midfield and the half
back line were under a lot of pressure despite the efforts of James
Maher. This problem was remedied somewhat when Joey Maher was transferred
back to the area. In fact Joey is the only player on the team that
seems to have senior potential.
Up front the team lacked point scoring ability despite the best efforts
of Seán O’Meara. The half time score was 1-11 to 1-4
and the second half was more or less a replica of the first with
Killenaule scoring 1-11 to Mullinahone’s 1-6. Mullinahone’s
goal came in the last minute.
Mullinahone: Bill Tobin, John Murphy, Martin Costello, Niall Doheny,
Richie Neary, Jackie Bolger, Aidan Hall, James Maher, Kieran Kennedy,
Joey Maher, Edwin O’Meara, Seán O’Meara, John
Luttrell, Declan McNamara, Micheál Cahill. Sub: Terry O’Brien.
Killenaule seem to have a lot more strength in depth at junior level
than Mullinahone at the present time or maybe their senior squad
has not needed the addition of so many junior players.
Community games – Good luck to Matthew Brennan
of Gurteen who will represent Mullinahone and Tipperary in Mosney
on Sunday in the
under-14 art competition. Thanks to all the committee for their hard
work during the year. Anyone interested in helping out next year
please contact Tina at 052-53513 or Una at 052-53343.
Lotto – On Monday the winning numbers
were 3, 14, 19 and 23. There was no jackpot winner. Six people matched
3 of the numbers
and shared e150. Congratulations to Micky Russell, Bee Cahill, Ger
Costello, Breda Tobin, Michael Walsh and Eileen Healy. The jackpot
next Monday will be in excess of e3,300.
1945 football – Research into our 1945 senior football team
which won the South championship and reached the county final, has
revealed the South Tipp draw that year. In their first game Mullinahone
defeated the newly formed St Patrick’s (Drangan/Cloneen). Next
day out. They also defeated Fethard and in the final they overcame
Ardfinnan. Has anyone got details of any of those games of 60 years
ago?
U-16 hurling – August 29, Mullinahone
v Kilsheelan. Mullinahone’s
game against Ballingarry on August 15 was postponed because of Ballingarry’s
involvement in the county under-16 football final which they won.
Moment of truth – Our senior hurling
season faces its moment of truth in Semple Stadium on Sunday when
they line out against
Toomevara in a last clash in the county championship. If the team
wins they will advance to the quarter-finals. A mighty effort will
be required from all if they are to repeat the result of 2002. Good
luck to all the lads and hopefully there will be plenty of support
in Semple Stadium.
Teagasc – An 80-hour course in farm management
has been taking place in the Teagasc Centre in Clonmel since August
18. The
course will conclude on September 2. For details phone (052) 21300
or (062) 51844.
